What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is a more serious form of gum disease (gingivitis), affecting not only the gums but also the jawbone that supports the teeth. It is a chronic infection that can lead to tooth loss if not treated promptly. Periodontitis occurs when inflamed gums spread deeper into the mouth, weakening the fibers that support the teeth and slowly breaking down the bone.

How does periodontitis develop?

Periodontitis usually arises from untreated gingivitis. When plaque accumulates for long periods of time and is not removed properly, the bacteria in the plaque can infect the structures around the teeth. The causes of periodontitis are similar to those of gingivitis, but there are also risk factors that increase the likelihood of periodontitis:

● Poor oral hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing leaves plaque and tartar, which can lead to infections in the gums.

● Smoking: Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums and slows down the healing process.

● Diabetes: Insufficiently controlled diabetes increases the risk of periodontitis.

● Genetic predisposition: Some people naturally have an increased risk of periodontitis.

● Stress: Stress can weaken the immune system, making it harder to fight infections.

● Medications: Certain medications can affect oral health and increase the risk of periodontitis.

Symptoms of periodontitis

Symptoms of periodontitis can vary, but the most common are:

● Red, swollen and painful gums that bleed often, especially when brushing.

● Retracting gums, making teeth appear longer.

● Bad breath or a foul taste in the mouth.

● Pus between the teeth or along the gums.

● Loose teeth or changes in the bite.

● Pain or sensitivity when chewing.

What can the dentist do?

Periodontitis often requires more intensive treatment than gingivitis. At Besth Medical Dental Spa, we offer the following treatments:

● Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing): This involves removing plaque and tartar under the gums, and smoothing the roots to promote the adhesion of the gums to the tooth.

● Antibiotics: Sometimes antibiotics are prescribed to fight the infection, especially in more severe cases.

● Surgical procedures: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair damaged gums or bone. This can range from flap surgery to clean deeper pockets to bone grafting to restore jawbone.

● Aftercare and maintenance: After treatment, regular visits to the dentist or dental hygienist are necessary to prevent the condition from returning.

What can you do yourself?

Prevention and good oral hygiene are key to preventing or controlling periodontitis:

● Brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and use a soft toothbrush.

● Floss daily or use toothpicks and brushes to remove plaque between teeth.

● Limit sugar and refined carbohydrates, which promote bacterial growth.

● Avoid smoking, as it interferes with gum healing.

● Visit the dentist regularly for checkups and professional cleanings.
