What is a bridge?

If you are missing a tooth, a bridge can be placed. A bridge consists of several crowns attached together and a fake tooth. The bridge is attached to two or more pillars making it firmly fixed. The bridge serves as a filling of the teeth. It has an aesthetic function and practicality. It is no longer visible that your tooth is missing; the empty space is filled. It also helps with chewing and prevents other teeth from crooked or outgrowing the opposite molars.

When do I need a bridge?

If you are missing 1 or more molars or teeth then a bridge can serve as a suitable filling. The bridge fills gaps in the teeth. A bridge offers several advantages: – Aesthetic: Your teeth will look nicer with no teeth or molars missing. – Practical: It prevents your teeth and or molars from crooked or growing. – Practical: It prevents teeth or molars facing the missing tooth from growing out. – Practical: When a molar or tooth is missing, the surrounding teeth can grow toward each other. A bridge prevents this from happening.

Different types of bridges

There are different types of bridges. Each type of bridge has its own advantages and disadvantages. As a result, some bridges fit a specific situation better than others. We will look at your specific situation and based on this we will decide which type of bridge will suit your teeth best.
– Regular bridge A regular bridge is attached to two teeth or molars located on either side of the open space. In the middle of the bridge is a dummy, an artificial tooth that fills the empty space. – Etching bridge If the teeth next to the empty space are in good condition, it is often better not to grind them away. In that case, an etch bridge may be used. This is an artificial tooth (dummy) attached not to pillars, but to retention wings. These wings are attached to the back of the adjacent teeth with a special adhesive. – Free-end bridge When the missing tooth is at the end of the teeth, a free-end bridge is used. In this case, the bridge is attached to two teeth or molars on one side of the empty space because there is no pillar available on the other side. Next to the pillars, the dummy, an artificial tooth, is placed to replace the missing tooth.

How does treatment with bridge placement go?

  1. Your personal situation is considered. After consultation, a choice is made in establishing a treatment plan and which bridge best suits your teeth.
  2. Grinding a tooth: First, part of the tooth is ground to make room for the bridge.
  3. After grinding, an impression is taken and bite registration. A plaster model of this is made in a dental laboratory. A bite registration is also performed where you bite down on a wax plate to determine the correct height of the crown or bridge.
  4. Define color: The crown will have a tooth-colored outer coating so it will look nice with the rest of your teeth.
  5. Temporary crown: To protect your tooth, you will receive a temporary bridge.
  6. Fastening: During the last appointment, the bridge is fitted and fixed with quick-setting cement. Any adjustments are still possible at this time. After this, you can eat normally with it.
  7. Maintenance: Good oral hygiene is essential, especially around the bridge. Brush carefully and use toothpicks, dental floss and/or brushes to prevent plaque.
