What is restorative dentistry?
Restorative dentistry is a branch of dentistry that focuses on replacing damaged or missing teeth. The treatment of cavities and other dental conditions also falls under restorative dentistry. Our restorative dentist also specializes in treating patients who need dental repair due to trauma or injury.
These treatments are performed on patients of all ages. Nevertheless, we see that adults and elderly people most often need restorative treatment. The aim of restorative dentistry is to preserve teeth and also to restore their natural appearance, shape and feel by restoring them:
- Tackling damaged teeth with dental fillings or bonding treatment;
- Restoring missing parts of the tooth structure with indirect or direct restorations, such as inlays, onlays, crowns or fillings;
- Completely replacing missing teeth with artificial restorations such as implants, bridges or dentures.
Tooth repair
There are several reasons to have a tooth repaired. In most cases it is necessary to schedule an appointment with the dentist as soon as possible. If you don’t do this, there is a chance that your tooth will be further damaged or infected (which may cause you to lose the tooth). Even in less urgent cases, such as dental wear or a small broken off piece of the tooth, it is useful to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
Repairing dental wear
Repairing teeth is one of the most common treatments. When we talk about repairing or refurbishing teeth, we are talking about restoring your teeth to a natural state. This also includes repairing dental wear and tear.
Possibilities in restorative dentistry
If you have only broken off a small piece of tooth enamel, we can repair the damage with a filling. Is it a front tooth or is the damage clearly visible when you smile? We usually opt for a procedure called “bonding”. With a tooth-coloured compositional resin, we will then restore your teeth to a natural state.
